This is Mrs. Cohen's eleventh year as the school psychologist at Savin Rock Community School (SRCS). During the 2019-2020 school year, Megan Rabuffo, M.A., is completing her school psychology internship at SRCS.

As school psychologists, some of our responsibilities include the following: evaluation of students to determine eligibility for special education services; individual and group counseling services for students who present with emotional or behavioral difficulties that affect academic performance; and, classroom lessons using a social skills curriculum called Second Step (

What is a School Psychologist?
School psychologists work to find the best solution for each student and situation and use different strategies to address student needs and to improve school and district-wide support systems. School psychologists work with students individually and in groups. In addition, school psychologists provide the following services.


-Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to find effective solutions to learning and behavior problems.
-Help others understand child development and how it affects learning and behavior.

-Evaluate eligibility for special education services.
-Assess cognitive skills and social-emotional development.
-Evaluate learning environments.

-Provide psychological counseling to students to help resolve interpersonal or family problems that influence school performance.
-Provide training in social skills, anger management, and problem-solving skills.
-Help families and schools manage crises, such as death, illness, or community trauma.

-Promote tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of diversity within the school community.
-Develop programs to make schools safer and more effective learning environments.
-Collaborate with school staff and community agencies to provide services directed at improving psychological health.

-Evaluate the effectiveness of behavior management programs.
-Identify and implement programs and strategies to improve schools.
-Use evidence-based research to develop and/or recommend effective interventions.
