Savin Rock and Washington students and their families gathered on April 3rd for Literacy Night at Savin Rock School. The theme for this Literacy Night was based on the folktale titled The Magic Lake, A Tale from Ecuador. Savin Rock students worked hard to create artwork in preparation for the event, with help and guidance from the wonderful Mrs. Jacobson (Savin Rock Art Teacher). Research has shown a link between student learning and the visual arts. Students were excited to see how their artwork complemented the folktale and helped bring it to life right before their eyes! Those in attendance had a fun-filled night which started with multi-cultural cuisine in the cafeteria. Families also had the opportunity to shop around at the Scholastic Book Fair hosted by the Savin Rock PTA. The storytellers, Theresa Whittaker and Frank Schwartz, gathered families in the gymnasium for interactive storytelling. Students were able to listen and move to the music as the storytellers told each story. Staff members from both Savin Rock and Washington engaged students in the experience through various activities, such as building fairytale fortune-tellers and other hands-on activities. Our night concluded with a four raffle prize winners. Those winners went home with school supplies and reading materials. Congratulations to the winners! Raffle

A fantastic night was had by all. We look forward to continuing our family-school connection through the annual Literacy Night. Thank you to all who volunteered their time and made this night possible.
