Mrs. Driend's speech announcing Savin Rock's Unsung Hero for 2019:

"This year’s unsung hero at Savin Rock School is someone who gives their all to the children each and every day.  She always has a smile on her face and puts the needs of the students first and foremost.  Having her as part of the staff has been a pleasure for me along with all that have had the opportunity to work with her.

It is my pleasure to announce that this year’s unsung hero, Cheryl Kalafut.

Cheryl has been a literacy aide at Savin Rock School for over 20 years.  She has played a significant role in the school’s literacy department, where she helps to implement daily 5 stations, small intervention reading groups, supports different writing genres and our literacy nights

Cheryl is respected and loved not only by her students but also by her peers.  Some of this sentiment includes:

“She is a dedicated, committed hardworking individual.   She is never without a smile, kind word or unending patience with both children and staff.  She is the first person to greet you in the morning.  Cheryl genuinely loves what she does and the children she works with.  She is encouraging and motivating to help the students do their best and supportive of the staff. Her calm and reassuring nature allows her to be a positive influence on the students."

Along with her work life, she also is a loving mother to two beautiful daughters, Christina and Sarah.  Cheryl enjoys spending time reading, cooking, baking and traveling with family and friends.

It has been my honor to work with Cheryl for the past 7 years.  She is truly deserving of this award."
