Currently, more than 22 million children receive free or reduced price meals through the National School Lunch Program, yet many are still without food.  For over 15 years, the Feeding America BackPack Program has been helping children get the nutritious and easy-to-prepare food they need to eat during the weekend.  Today, bags of food are assembled at more than 160 local food banks and then distributed to more than 450,000 children at the end of the week.  However, with more than 13 million children facing hunger in the United States alone, we still are far from reaching the majority.  Bernie Beaudreau, CEO of the Connecticut Food Bank, teamed up with the Today Show along with Savin Rock to address these problems.  Families who participate in the BackPack Program were contacted and asked to be interviewed in hopes to spread awareness.  Feed America surveyed schools in June and the responses indicated that the program is widely appreciated and most schools wish they had a larger allocation of backpacks because there are so many more kids in need. Currently, the Food Bank helps 40 deserving families from Savin Rock and is working diligently to one day be able to help the rest.  Savin Rock appreciates CT Food Bank and NBC for bringing awareness to childhood hunger.  See the link below for footage from the Today Show featuring Savin Rock.
