On December 13th, the Wreaths across America convoy made a stop at Savin Rock Community School.  The goal of the organization, founded by Morrill and Karen Worchester, is to “Remember, Honor, and Teach.” During the assembly, the founders of the organization gave a speech to the students.  They explained that the convoy- made up of volunteers, veterans, active duty personnel, Blue Star families and Gold Star families- travels from Maine to Washington D.C. each year.    In Washington D.C., Wreaths across America lays wreaths on every headstone in Arlington National Cemetery, as do many military cemeteries throughout the country.  The organization generously donated wreaths, which fourth graders placed in honor of each branch of the military. At the end of the assembly, all students went outside to see the vehicles that were a part of the convoy, as well as, the police and motorcycle escort.

While the event honored veterans and active duty military, some of Savin Rock’s own teachers were honored for their service.  Mr. Rodrigues was recognized for his service in the US Army.  In addition, Mrs. Tompkins, Mrs. Vitale, and Mrs. Scanlon were honored for each having a son who is serving/or recently served.  Also, during the assembly students from every grade participated in a read aloud of H is for Honor: A Military Alphabet and a sing-along of patriotic songs.
